 The Mother of All Conflicts
  By : Awdhesh Singh

There is one problem that has engulfed the human race since the beginning of human civilization and no one including the Prophets and Avatars have been able to find an answer to it.

The question is very plain and simple.

Why people fight with each other on everything?

There has been several attempts to create a society where people live peacefully with each other and do not fight. All prophets taught various ways and gave Commandments for the human race which could take them to a life of eternal happiness and bliss. The scientists too tried to discover the answer to this question in the logical and psychological way. The Sufis tried to discover it in their mystical way. Every leader of the country tried his best to see that the people do not fight with each other in their country by making a fair and just society.

Yet fights between brothers did not stop.

It was believed that people fight since they are not treated fairly. Hence many rules and laws were made in an attempt to provide equality and justice to every citizen of the country. There are provisions for severe punishment including death sentence to stop people in breaking the laws.

Yet the conflicts continues as before.

The Spiritual Leaders tried to solve the problem in another way. They gave the concept of after-life, re-birth, heaven or Paradise after death so that people follow virtuous life in this world in the hope of future lives. The wrongdoers were threatened with severe punishment and eternal banishment if they sin, yet the people continue to break the law and fight with each other. Jesus preached nonviolence and Hinduism called nonviolence as the ultimate duty of man, Buddhism and Jainism prohibited killing of even animals.

Yet the killing of brother by brother continued.

We often wonder, if there is any way, people can stop fighting and start living peacefully.

To know the answer of this question, we must know what is the source of all conflict?

The Mother of All Conflicts

There may be innumerable reasons for the people to fight. Yet when we go deeper into any fight, we are bound to come across the same reason behind all conflict.

All conflict arises due to the fight between body and soul.

A human being consists of a body which is material and measurable and a soul which is imperceptible. The body of a man is no different than any other animal. It has the same requirement of food, water, shelter, sex etc.

However, as a soul, a man is totally different than any other animal.

The soul of the man seems to be intimately connected to the Soul of The World which we call Ultimate Soul (Parramatta) or God.  Human soul has a great control on the mind of the man. The mind of the man seems to be under constant conflict since it receives direction from the body as well as soul. If both directions are same, the man gets peace. However, when these directions are contradictory, a conflict arises in the mind of the man which disturbs the peace of the man.

The mind is constantly trying to resolve this conflict.

No human being can always take the side of soul or that of the body. It has to always balance the two.

On the Macro Level, same is the case of the society or the world at large.

The world too seems to be divided into two types of people.

One who listens to the call of the body more and the other who listens to the call of soul more?

The call of the body is same for all animals which mean the satisfaction and gratification of body and senses. Man listening to this call would try to do everything that can make his life more comfortable and Enjoyable. In this attempt, he tries to earn as much wealth as possible as wealth helps him in acquiring material comforts for the body. He also tries to acquire as much power as possible to himself which alone can ensure that he can get not only the things which can be bought from money but also which can be acquired by force.

The call of the soul is just the opposite. Hence a man seeks the benefit of all humanity and not the self-gratification. The soul being part of God tries to direct the man to do a task which is in the best interest of all beings.

The people listening to the call of their soul cannot stop fighting with the selfish people who are seeking only for the self. The selfish people too have to fight to defend their material possessions which alone can make the body and senses happy.

The War of Body and Soul

It is due to the conflict between the calls of the body and soul, all conflicts arises in this world. In a country, for example, the laws are made so that everyone is treated in fair and just manner. This is spiritual call of humanity as it is call from the soul which treats everyone equal.

However, there are limited material resources in this world and everyone is hankering for that. Hence the selfish body forces the mind to acquire more for the self which means breaking the law of the land or breaking the laws of morality. Therefore, the conflict becomes inevitable between the people who follow the call of the body and that of the soul.

Ending the Conflict

The conflict is the world can be ended only if all people either start listening to the call of the body or that of the soul. If everyone listens to the call of the body, they shall all become animals only as they were many thousands year ago. It is for this reason that all religions and spiritual leaders ask the people to follow the spiritual path and avoid the conflict. It is difficult but surely not impossible for the humanity to follow the call of the soul which alone can end all conflicts of this world.
