The magic of dream is profound and so is the mystery behind the dreams. Dreams and imagination gives us hope and vision. Brian Tracy said “All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day towards their distant vision, that goal or purpose.”
Poets and philosophers attach spiritual meaning and significance to dream. Eileen Elias Freeman said “Pay attention to your dreams - God`s angels often speak directly to our hearts when we are asleep”. Dream is also equated with creativity and often the material world has been said to be the dream of God. H.F. Hedge said “Dreaming is an act of pure imagination, attesting in all men a creative power, which if it were available in waking, would make every man a Dante or Shakespeare”.
Scientists, however, don’t assign any special significance to dream due to lack of scientific evidences. They consider dreams to be the effort by our cognitive system to make sense out of the neural activity of the brain during the sleep. For them, it is just one of the four (or five) stages of sleep which we undergo every night. Scientists have failed to find any significant meaning out of dream. Noted psychologist, Sigmund Freud carefully analyzed the dreams of his patients to gain insight inot the causes of their problem. He believed that in dreams we can give expression to impulses and desires we find unacceptable during our waking hours. He interpreted the dreams during his lifetime. However, subsequent studies could not confirm the scientific basis of the interpretation of the dreams provided by Freud.
Scientific Studies of Dream.
Scientific studies have shown that during the sleep, the activity of brain and body is not suspended but follows a different pattern. Brain continues to be active during sleep, though in a different way. The EEG machines, which measures the pattern of the brains, electrical changes as well as the physiological measures, provides the clue about the body and brain activity during sleep.
During the sleep, man passes through four stages which have been defined by scientists as alpha, beta, gamma and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage. The REM stage represents the lightest level of sleep which can be broken by a loud sound. In this stage of sleep, there is a rapid eye movement under the closed eyelids. The EEG pattern of a person in REM stage resembles the EEG of a waking person. It means that during the dreams the physical and mental activity of a person is almost similar to those in the waking state. Almost one fourth of the time of sleep is spent in this phase which is characterized by dreaming.
Dreams have been studied by different scientists. Studies on dream established that the neural activities of brain during dream are not random but follows a definite pattern. The characters in the dream are not the unknown faces but they appear regularly in the dream of a person over a long period of time. Domhoff after analyzing thousands of dreams dreamt all over the world found a surprising regularity in dream content that underlies individual and also cross-cultural differences . In his view, it is through dreams that our sleeping mind expresses our daily concerns and ideas about ourselves and the reality that surrounds us. His studies revealed that dreams also differ in several ways between children and adults. For example, animals play a more prominent role in children`s dreams (up to 50 percent of all characters, compared to only 5 percent in adults` dreams). He concluded that the dreams consists of FOUR C`s: concern, conception [of ourselves and the surrounding reality], continuity [between our waking thoughts and our dreams], and consistency [throughout our adult lives].
Scientific studies on dream have also established that both people and animal that are learning a great deal or adapting to a new situation have more than the normal amount of REM sleep (dreams). Many people notice that they dream more when they are traveling in a foreign country, going out with a new friend, starting a new job or school, facing other challenges or experiencing significant psychological problems.
Imagination and dreaming
Imagination and dreaming are closely related and often used interchangeably. In the words of Gloria Steinem “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning”. Rollo May also said “Imagination is the outreaching of mind .... the bombardment of the conscious mind with ideas, impulses, images and every sort of psychic phenomena welling up from the preconscious. It is the capacity to dream dreams and see visions”.
Even Einstein stated “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
Yet, imagination and dreaming are different from each other. How do we know that we are dreaming? The transition from imagination and dreaming is as smooth as the transition from the waking state to the dreaming state. We do not know when our imagination has taken the shape of a dream as we go to sleep and the dreams have become imagination as we are awakened. Broadly speaking, Imagination is the creation of the conscious mind while dreaming is the handiwork of an unconscious mind. However the transition between dream and imagination is as smooth as the transition from conscious breathing to the natural or unconscious breathing. The moment you know that you are dreaming, the dream is lost and the imagination begins. Some people are able to carry their imagination through in as realistic manner as dreams. They can continue dreaming even after being aware that it was a continuation of dream. Similarly some people’s imagination is as realistic as dream, when they forget that they are imagining as the imagination goes beyond their control. People often name such people as a daydreamer. Almost all great poets, philosophers and even scientists had been daydreamer in their lives.
As per the Aatmic Science principle, the Soul is the mirror image of the body in the imperceptible world. This concept is explained in the article “The Language of the Unspoken Words”. All the souls together are part of the Universal Soul or God just like all drops of the ocean are part of an ocean. The Mind, communicate with the soul which in turn communicates with the souls of the different organs of the body as well as the Universal Soul. Mind, merely interprets the communication of the soul in the logical language known to the person.
Imagination is triggered by the thought of the person which causes the discussion between the individual soul and the universal soul to begin. In this communication, we can visualize something that is not otherwise known to the logical mind. Let us illustrate the case with an example.
Take an issue which affects a society. Say the question is, “Whether abortion should be banned?” If you want to know the result, the ideal method is to let the entire population vote on the issue (Yes, No, Not Sure).and then get the result. Since this method is impractical (being lengthy and expensive), the most common method is to draw a representative sample of the society and ask the people to vote for options
However, there is an another method to know the answer which highly subjective but perhaps as accurate or even more accurate. Ask an experienced person to guess the mood of the people on this issue, who are likely to vote for these three options. The chances are that any sensitive and experienced person would be able to guess the answer from his own intuition which would be very close to the actual result. You can also try this sitting at your home as such surveys are regularly being conducted by SMS/Internet/telephone calls by many news channels.
How, one can guess the mood of millions of the people just from his imagination within a fraction of a second? No logic can explain it. This is possible since during imagination, your soul communicate with the universal soul, which provide you the right answer since it is the repository of all the Souls of the World.
If you know a good part of the world, you can provide an answer even for different societies and provide answers which can be even country specific or state specific, gender specific or even age specific. A good leader never rely only on statistics and data for such answers since from his imagination, he is able to get the answer of the questions which is almost impossible to be provided by any survey or voting. People, are often hesitant to reveal the truth during surveys but such truths are known to the people of great imagination as the souls do not lie. When a musician composes music and his soul is in tune with God then he knows whether or not, the people are going to like his creation. A good song is appreciated by all the present and even future generations.
However, in order to understand the methodology of thought, imagination and dream, we have to understand the concept of Micro-universe i.e. our body.
