Change your Nature to Change your Weight

One study recently created a world wide sensation. It proved that the intelligence of a person is proportional to the size of his shoes. The study conducted over many years was based on a large sample of data that were taken from different ethnic and age groups and spread over a number of countries.

The study was soon marred into controversy. The male chauvinists were rejoicing as they were using the finding to establish their age old belief that males are more intelligent than females. The woman activities were once again defensive. The study also increased racial prejudices in the society. The Europeans started giving eschewed looks to their Asian counterparts who had smaller shoe sizes. The study came as a boon to the slogging shoe industry which saw unprecedented boom in their sale after it was published. The study was a great moral booster for the Africans whose average shoe sizes were the largest in the world. Soon the study became a matter of discussion and debate in every TV channels, every college and indeed within every family.

However, soon the findings of the study were challenged by many scientists and activists. They conducted their own researches which proved that there was no correlation between the intelligence and the shoe size. The matter was then handed over to a team of experts who after great investigation found the loopholes in the study. They found that the researcher had taken the sample size of all the age groups including the children. The children had lower intelligence scores compared to the adults and also had the lower shoe size than adults. Therefore, the study (wrongly) established that the shoe size and the intelligence were positively related.

Perhaps you have not read about this study as it was never published in any newspaper. It was mentioned in a book on “Research Methodology” (as an illustration) to warn the researchers the perils of finding relationships between the “dependent” variables. The lessons learned from this case study are, however, quite valuable. It illustrates that we may often reach to the wrong conclusion in any statistical analysis and study if both the variables (for which the relationship is sought to be established) are not “independent” to each other but depend on a third variable. For example, in this case, the age of the person was the “third variable” which was affecting both variables i.e. intelligence (scores) and the shoes sizes. Ignoring this critical variable, the researcher arrived at totally wrong conclusion.

Scientists have considered the mind and the body to be independent variables. All studies are conducted based on this basic assumption. The result is that today there are innumerable “diets” (one by each expert) which all claims to be effective in reducing the weight. There is no consensus amongst the experts what the ideal diet to reduce weight should be. In fact even the recommendations regarding the benefits of fat, protein and carb are radically different for each diet. If fruits are the ideal diet in Harvey Diamond diet, it is almost prohibited in Atkins and South Beach diet. If Harvey Diamond diet prohibits animal products completely, these are highly recommended in Atkins and South Beach diet. If USDA diet recommends balanced food to be taken daily, Mediterranean diet divides the foods to daily, weekly and monthly routines.  Even the most commonly held formula to reduce weight viz. reduce calorie intake and increase calorie burnout (by exercise) is not agreeable to all the experts as Harvey Diamond diet poses no restriction on calories. Science thus appears to be helpless in solving the problem of obesity (Read The Epidemics of Obesity and the Helpless Science  for details).

The summery of some of the most popular diets can be summarized as following.

There is also no consensus amongst the experts on the other aspect of loosing weight i.e. physical exercise. Some experts advise aerobics as the best method to loose weight as it increases ones heart beats and thus burns more calories. Other experts’ advice you against aerobics since it causes jerks in the body and may damage tissues. Another theory says that aerobics increases the breathing rate hence burns the calorie faster which results in high pangs of hunger (so you end up eating more calorie than you burn by workout). Therefore, many experts suggest anaerobic exercises (like Body building, lifting weights) which builds muscles thereby increases the metabolism rate of the body which leads to burning of more calories naturally without any workout. Some people advise games like Badminton, tennis, swimming, jogging, and running which burns more calories in less time. Yet, many experts totally disapprove any type of physical workout and believe that stretching exercises and yoga are the best method to maintain weight and make the body flexible and proportionate. In India, pranayam (breathing exercises) is also a very popular for weight reduction. Many experts advocate “meditation” as the best method for physical and mental health.

If you have the tendency of being overweight, you just can’t stop envying the people who maintain the right weight without any effort. These people can eat anything and often don’t do any workout yet they maintain their weight. You, on the other extreme, are working hard in gym, avoid eating everything you love to eat, yet the weighting scale does not tilt in your favour.

Mind, Body and Soul

The Aatmic Science has two fundamental principles.

(1)              The physical self (body and mind) is the material manifestation (image) of the imperceptible self i.e. Soul (Aatma).

(2)              All the actions of the man are done automatically by the nature of the soul while the (mind of) man thinks that he is the doer (of the action).

Therefore, the scientists always find a direct correlation between the body (weight and shape) and mind of the person vis-ŕ-vis the actions taken by him. They ignore the fact that both are directly related with soul. Thus any research will pick up this correlation without understanding the fundamental truth that it is the soul which is responsible for both the shape of the body as well as the action of mind and body.  Aatmic Science has devised a “Nature Test” which measures the nature of the person and predicts the weight of the person. The predictions of the “Nature Test” have been more than 90% accurate. (Please take the Nature Test to see for yourself how your nature is responsible for your weight).

For example, the scientists may find a direct correlation between the type of food consumed by a person and the weight. People who eat high calorie foods like fat, meat, sweets are more, likely to be overweight than those who eat less calorie foods like fruits and vegetables. Hence the calorie theory is correct statistically and scientifically. But if you ask the most fundamental question; why the overweight people have strong desire to eat calorie rich calorie food knowing fully well that these foods are bad for their health, scientists have no answer. We all will agree that it is the overweight people who are keen in reducing their calories but they fail as they have high “desire” for such foods than the normal weight people. Similarly it is the overweight people who need to exercise or jog and most of them really hate it. They may be forcing themselves (temporarily) into it by sheer determination and the force of mind. Yet such attempts do not succeed as his body revolts the force of his mind causing withdrawal symptoms which finally forces the mind to give up actions which are against the nature of the person. The body can be compared with a spring which has a fixed length. One can press it and reduce its size by force yet as soon as the force is relieved the spring comes back to its original shape with a vengeance.

As per the Aatmic Science theory the nature of the (soul of) man is of three types.

(i)                 Satvik (Nature of Truth or light)

(ii)               Rajsik (Nature of Passion  or desire)

(iii)              Tamsik (Nature of Ignorance or darkness)

Each person has all the three types of nature within him in different proportions. While passion is the fuel of life and zeal, its excess can cause unimaginable harm to the body and soul of the person. It is the nature of passion which is responsible for high body weight and the actions of a personas like restlessness, high passion for material accomplishment and high desire for sensual pleasure. Thus the uncontrolled passion of the man is reflected in the body as the uncontrolled weight. Similarly the nature of darkness is responsible for the tendency of addiction that is also reflected in different types of actions of the mind and body like laziness, useless chatting, anti-establishment thoughts, contempt for sacrifice, charity and discipline etc.

The satvik nature of a person is synonymous with the ideal body and mind which ensures health and happiness to the person. Hence the solution to obesity and addiction lies in reducing the nature of passion and darkness while increasing the nature of truth.

Logically, if the body and soul are mirror image of each other then why the body craves for the food which is harmful to it or does not perform the actions which are good for it. This mystery is explained in the Gita (VI, 6) in the following verse:

The man who has won the self (body, senses and mind) by the help of his intelligence (soul), his soul is friend of self. Else the soul of the man behaves like enemy of the self (body).

Therefore, the key to good health and happiness is to win the body, senses and mind by the soul. The method of winning is given in the Gita (III 42-43) as following.

The senses are superior to the body. Above the senses is the mind, above the mind is the soul (individual intelligence) and above the soul is God (Universal Intelligence). Thus realizing God to be superior to intelligence, control the body by the soul and destroy lust, the eternal enemy of man.

Using these fundamental principles, the Aatmic Science suggests following measures to change your life to achieve the optimum body weight and eliminate the tendency of addiction.

Change your Nature to Change your Life

Aatmic Science prescribes very simple and different approach to reduce weight. The key to weight reduction is to discipline your mind, senses and body. One can choose any of the methods prescribed in each section which suits his nature, temperament and lifestyle.

Disciple of Mind

Faith

One of the major reasons for the indiscipline of mind is the lack of faith. Faith is very important in keeping one’s mind fixed and focused. It is immaterial what type of faith one has, as all faiths are equally good. The best faith of course is the faith on God who can’t err and who is present in all living creatures and the nature. The faith in God unites all human beings amongst themselves and with the other living and nonliving creatures. If one is a nonbeliever, he can have faith on other ideals of world like humanity or universal love and brotherhood. One can also have faith in the principles of Karma which states that one will reap what he sow. Gita states that one should work without the expectation of the fruits of action as man has control only on his action and not on the fruits of action. If the action is done properly, the fruits will automatically accrue with or without desire. This principle is logical and very useful in life.

Meditation

Meditation is accepted as one of the best methods to control the mind. Mediation is recommended in practically all religions. It is popular in the world in different forms. (Please refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meditation for details). You can follow the meditation in your own way at your own convenience. All you have to do is to sit on a comfortable posture, close your eyes (to the external world) and focus your mind on any object you have faith. If you can’t focus on any object or thought simply focus your mind on your breath. In the beginning your mind may not be focused and many thoughts may come and go in your mind. You can just watch these thoughts as an observer without any reaction to it. With practice your mind will become more disciplined.

Silence

One can also control his mind simply by being silent for sometime in the course of the day. You can practice silence during your work, during driving and even during your walking and exercising. Silence is equally effective to discipline the mind as faith or meditation.

Discipline of Senses

Changing the Nature of Food

The foods have been identified in the Gita as of three types. The Satvik foods are the foods which are good to taste (like fresh fruits, vegetables, cereals) and easy to digest. The Rajsik foods are hot, spicy, tempting and difficult to digest. The Tamsik foods are cold, smelling, putrid and repulsive. In order to change your nature you have to increase the content of your satvik food and reduce the content of rajsik and tamsik foods. Here the restriction is not on calories but on the type of food. You can eat the foods as per your desire without unduly bothering about the calories.

Identify the food which you are passionate about. The passionate foods are those which affect your senses, incite your hunger and make you loose all controls while eating. The passionate foods are highly tempting to the senses (good smell, good appearance and good taste) like sweets, fried dishes, burgers, pizza, chicken, meat; cheese etc. Such foods are usually small in number. It is easy to eliminate or reduce some of the most passionate food from your daily routine. Gradually reduce the content of the passionate food from your daily diet and increase the content of the satvik food. The change of food habits would become gradually easier as the change of nature will automatically change your desire for the type of food you like.

Fasting

Fasting is an effective tool for controlling the senses. Most of us are always driven by the dictates of senses. We want to eat instantly what is liked by our palates, cherished by our sense of smell, good to be see and nice to be touched. Fasting at once controls the senses. You need not fast for days to get the benefit. You can simply fast for few minutes. All you have to do is that you must remain hungry at least once in day for sometime. Even half and hour of control on hunger is good enough. You can gradually increase the duration of your fast for a day, as your capacity to withstand hunger improves. If fasting is coupled with faith, the result is much better as it controls your body as well as your mind.

Discipline of Body

You can use one or more of these methods to discipline your body depending upon, your nature, convenience and the extent of the problem. Some of these methods to discipline the body and the mind are discussed as following.

(b)      Yoga

Yoga means union, i.e. union of body and soul. It has emerged as one of the popular methods to maintain weight and lead a healthy life. There are many asana (postures) in yoga, which you can practice as per your convenience. It is the best method to disciple your body and soul.

 (c)      Breathing Exercises (Pranayam)

It is believed that our rhythm of breathing is a refection of our emotion. Our breathing pattern varies depending upon our emotions. Hence by the discipline of the breathing you can discipline your emotions and thereby your mind. The simplest breathing exercise may include inhaling deep breath, stopping the breath for a few seconds and then exhaling it gradually.  In the process maintain silence and observe the breathing process in your body. You can get lot of information on breathing exercises from internet.

(d)      Aerobics: If you are young and not very overweight, you can do aerobics. You can jump, or exercise fast so that your heart beat increases much above the normal pace. Please follow it only if you have no joint problem and you are not extremely obese.

(e)      Workout: There are many exercises which increase your physical strength and improve your muscles. Workouts increase the physical strength and muscle of the body which increase the metabolism rate. These exercises must be done in moderation under the supervision of experts.

(f)       Games: You can also discipline your body by participating in games of your choice. You can play any game like badminton, tennis etc which requires the concentration of your mind and discipline of your body. Here calorie burning is not important.  Even the games like chess, cards, carom can be useful since these also require the discipline of the body and mind.

(g)      Reading Books: Reading books require tremendous discipline of mind, body and senses. Therefore, it can be the best method for loosing weight for those who are fond of reading. Most of the people, once they complete their studies stop reading books. They often read only news papers and articles in the newspapers which does not need focus of mind and which can be flipped through in minutes. They have no time and inclination to read books which needs concentration of mind and many hours of physical effort. This is perhaps the reason why many people gain weight once they have stopped studying. The good news is that most of us who at any point of their life liked reading, can rediscover their passion for book. The most beneficial books are those which are non-fiction, long and needs concentration of mind. Fictions, stories and short articles often do little to discipline the mind, body and senses.

Conclusions

The Aatmic Science principles illustrate that the mind and the body are not independent to each other as both these entities are the reflection of the soul. Therefore, the key to change one’s life lies in changing the nature of the soul. Most of the dieting and exercises also affects the change of nature thereby automatically changes the weight of the person. Yet the one-size-fit-all solution prescribed by the experts does not suit to all since the nature of every person is different. This fundamental truth of body weight and addiction has been revealed by the Aatmic Science based on the knowledge of the Gita which allows the person to choose the method which best suits his nature. This results in effortless reduction of weight and helps in deaddiction.
